Description

Cordarone / Procor (generic name: amiodarone) is an anti-arrhythmic drug. It is used for the treatment of arrhythmia, a condition caused by abnormal heart rate or heart rhythm. It is also used to treat coronary arterial insufficiency. Amiodarone works by slowing down overactive electrical signals generated in the SA node of the heart. This helps to stabilize the heart rhythm.

Amiodarone is also used to treat heart conditions such as tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. Cordarone can help manage these conditions by stabilizing the heart rate and rhythm.  This lowers the risk of complications associated with these conditions.

Dosage

The dosage of Cordarone is set by the prescribing healthcare provider based on the patient’s heart rate and the condition to be treated. Usually, a lower dosage is prescribed to elderly patients.

The tablets can be taken with little water. They can be crushed or halved before use if necessary.

Caution

There is some evidence that amiodarone can have a deleterious effect on the thyroid gland of a fetus during pregnancy. For that reason amiodarone is contraindicated during pregnancy, except in exceptional circumstances. Since the drug has a long half-life, it is recommended to discontinue use of the drug if pregnancy is planned, and to adopt reliable contraception all through the treatment and for several weeks afterwards.

Storage

Cordarone must be stored in a cool and dry place. Always keep the medication at 25ºC / 77ºF or below, without direct exposure to moisture or sunlight. Please read our guide on handling medicine safely.
