Description
Dovato (generic names: dolutegravir and lamivudine) is an antiviral medication that is prescribed to treat human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) in adults and in adolescents (12 years of age and older) who weigh at least 90 pounds (40 kilos.)
Dovato contains two active ingredients. Dolutegravir belongs to a group of anti-retroviral medicines that block the enzyme HIV integrase, which is necessary for the HIV virus to invade the cell’s DNA and for the infected cells to spread. Lamivudine belongs to a group of anti-retroviral medicines called nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Dovato does not cure HIV infection; it keeps the amount of virus in the body at a low level. This helps maintain the number of CD4 cells in the blood. CD4 cells are a type of white blood cells that are important in helping the body fight infection.
