Description

Astelin / Rhinolast, Azelair (generic name: azelastine) is a nasal spray used to treat allergic rhinitisand as Optilas eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis.

Azelastine belongs to the group of medicines known as antihistamines. Azelastine works by blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical released during allergic reactions that causes symptoms such as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, and itchy or watery eyes. By reducing histamine activity, azelastine helps relieve nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, and eye discomfort.

Treatment is generally long-term during allergy seasons or as prescribed by a doctor. More information is available from MedlinePlus.

Usual dosage

It is important to follow the dosage instructions printed on the label of the box.For allergic rhinitis in adults and children aged 6 years and older, the usual dose is one spray in each nostril twice daily.

For allergic conjunctivitis, adults and children aged 4 years and older usually apply one drop into each affected eye twice daily.

Azelastine should be used consistently at the same times each day during allergy season for best effect. When using the nasal spray, blow the nose gently first and avoid tilting the head back.

For eye drops, remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, unless it is close to the next dose. Do not double dose.

Impotant: Continue treatment regularly throughout allergy season, even when symptoms improve, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare provider.
