Description
Zovirax Cream (generic name: acyclovir) is a medicine for treating cold sores and fever blisters (herpes labialis). It helps heal the sores faster and reduces symptoms like tingling, pain, burning, and itching. Acyclovir is in a group of drugs called antivirals, which work by stopping the virus from growing. This medicine doesn’t cure herpes, stop passing the infection to others, or prevent future outbreaks.DosageThe usual procedure is to begin using the medication when the first symptoms of an infection are noticed, such as tingling, burning, or redness. Hands should be washed with soap and water before and after medication use. The affected areas should be cleaned and dried before applying the cream. It should be gently rubbed into the affected area, typically five times a day (every three to four hours) for four days for cold sores. An adequate amount of cream should cover all red, tingling, burning areas and sores. The medication should only be used on the skin and not be applied to the eyes, nose, mouth, or genitals. If it comes into contact with these areas, rinse thoroughly with water.StorageKeep it in a place cooler than 25°C/77°F, but avoid storing it in the fridge. Please read our friendly tips on handling medicine safely.FAQHow much Zovirax to apply?Use sufficient medicine to cover all the sores. Normally, applying a 1.25-cm (about ½-inch) strip of cream to each 5 × 5 cm (about 2 × 2 inches) affected skin area is enough unless a doctor advises otherwise. Can you permanently cure cold sores?Cold sores usually heal themselves in about two weeks. While there isn’t a cure for cold sores, medications can help lessen the symptoms. Can I use cold sore ointment on genital herpes?Topical antiviral creams for cold sores on the mouth should not be applied to the genital area under any circumstance.
