Singulair is used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis
Description
Singulair (montelukast) is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months old and to relieve runny nose and sneezing caused by allergies in adults and children as young as six months old. Montelukast works by blocking the natural substance leukotriene that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It allows for easier breathing by reducing swelling and inflammation of the airways.
Singulair is not a steroid or an antihistamine. It is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It is often prescribed together with a steroid or antihistamine to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. It does not work immediately and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. A rescue inhaler such as Ventolin should be used during an attack.
DosageSingulair comes in four forms: Singulair 4 mg Sprinkles for Kiddies, Singulair 4 mg Chewable Tablets for pre-school kids, Singulair 5 mg Chewable Tablets and Singulair 5 mg Chewable Tablets for Adults.
Take the dose as prescribed. Try to remember to always take Singulair at night.
