Description

Keflex / Cefovit (generic name: cephalexin) is an antibiotic prescribed to treat bacterial infections in both adults and children older than one year. Cephalexin acts by interfering with the production of bacterial cell walls. This ruptures the cell walls and kills the bacteria. Keflex is also an alternative for patients allergic to penicillin.

DosageThe prescribing doctor will set the dosage and regimen. For adults and children over 12, the usual daily dosage depends on the nature and severity of the infection and is one to four grams in divided doses. For children under the age of 12, the doctor will calculate the exact dosage based on body weight to be taken in separate doses every 8 or 12 hours.

Keflex should be taken with water and can be taken with or without food. The prescribed dose should not be exceeded.

StorageKeflex should be stored in a dry area at temperatures less than 25°C/77°F. It should be kept in a closed container and out of the reach of children to avoid poisoning. Do not dispose of medicine in the toilet or trash. Find out more from our blog about to store and properly dispose of unused medications safely.

Q&AWhat is the difference between amoxicillin and cephalexin?Cephalexin and amoxicillin are beta-lactam antibiotics, but they don’t work the same way. Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic, and amoxicillin is a penicillin derivative. While they treat some of the same bacterial organisms, they also treat unique organisms. Cephalexin effectively treats some conditions that amoxicillin is not, such as mastitis (inflammation of breast tissue from infection), and bone and joint infections.

How long do bacterial infections last? Some bacterial infections that result from primary infections can clear within two to three days under proper treatment with Cefalexin. Others, like ear infections, pneumonia, and sinusitis, can take more than 10 to 14 days. To stop the infection from coming back, it’s important to finish the full course the doctor prescribed, even if you feel better.

What is the most common treatment for a bacterial infection?Antibiotics are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infections. They kill bacteria or prevent them from reproducing and spreading.
